MISSION STATEMENT
Elements of Equity is an integral initiative by Still-Labs LLC, designed to foster diversity, inclusion, and equitable opportunities for underrepresented students pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). In elements of equity we recognize the significant barriers faced by many talented individuals from marginalized backgrounds—barriers that often stem from a lack of resources rather than a lack of potential—we aim to close the gap by providing critical training and economic support for students who may not have the highest academic performance but demonstrate strong intelligence, potential, and grit.

This initiative offers internships, and paid research positions in labs, specifically tailored to train students in essential, in-demand lab skills that are critical for success in both academic and industry settings. By partnering with businesses, Elements of Equity will create pathways for these students to gain practical experience, building the foundational skills necessary to pursue graduate education and leadership roles in research and development. Areas of focus will include analytical chemistry and biosciences.

Unlike traditional programs that focus solely on academic metrics such as GPA, Elements of Equity acknowledges the diverse talents and intelligence present in students who may have faced challenges in the educational system.
Many students possess the aptitude and capability to thrive in STEM but lack the resources or opportunities to demonstrate their skills in a lab setting.

By offering targeted training and providing financial incentives, Elements of Equity aims to level the playing field, giving these students an opportunity to prove themselves, gain confidence, and ultimately become competitive candidates for graduate school and professional positions.

The inspiration for this program comes from the mentorship experience of Jason Williams, a Ph.D. candidate at UCLA, who has personally mentored undergraduates from underrepresented backgrounds through programs like SeaGrant Pathways and Veterans in STEM. During a research project for a startup, Jason mentored a post-baccalaureate student from El Salvador who initially struggled to gain acceptance into graduate school due to a lack of formal lab experience. Over the course of a year, she gained hands-on skills and confidence, ultimately securing admission to UC Santa Cruz. Her story highlights the transformative power of practical experience, forming the core philosophy behind Elements of Equity.
